To show that I wasn't just whining on that 2nd disastrous test, I have comparison plots for that "bad" 2nd test and my latest "good" 3rd test. First the bad:

Click on the image for a better look. There is a lot of data plotted here so I want you to focus on the solid blue and dashed red lines. You can see that the Stages power meter (red dashed) predicts a higher power output than the Computrainer (blue) of about 50 watts at any given time during the 20 minute test. And, yes, I calibrated my power meter. As soon as I started, I knew something felt wrong because, yes, it was hard, but too hard considering I was mashing and the Computrainer was telling me I was "only" putting out barely 250 watts during the beginning. As you can see, I gave up at about the 3 minute mark, shifting to an easier gear. If the Stages power meter was correct (which I think it was), I was putting out over 300 watts during that time period--I wasn't going to be able to sustain that for 20 minutes even if I decided to enter a very, very, dark place. Another telltale is that for the first minute I was trying to lift my pace since Computrainer was saying I wasn't working hard enough, but the power seemed to keep constant at around 245-ish watts. On the other hand, Stages was showing that I was indeed lifting my effort steadily from about 300 to 325 watts.

Now the good:

Same idea here, but totally different result! Look how magical the plot is--Computrainer and Stages data are almost on top of each other! In fact, towards the end they almost look identical in a mean average sense. Not sure it is because either Computrainer or Stages corrected due to "warm up" or if it was an anomaly due to my erratic surging while approaching puke mode. This tells me that the Stages and Computrainer can be expected to match each other if all is good with calibration, warm up, etc. Yay data!!

I do have other interesting plots of heart rate and speed that seem to support my armchair-ing above, but I am done nerding out this time around. Yes, I know, HTFU...but there is such a thing as smart HTFU-ing...I think...K-SPoThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17980701875474582337noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8942601.post-17055584588017285702016-02-01T17:59:00.001-06:002016-02-01T20:48:11.754-06:00Stages Power Meter vs. Trainer Road and Zwift

So, it's been a while since I did a pretty plots blog, so here it is! I recently joined the power meter crowd (yes, finally!) and wanted to see how the power estimations of Trainer Road and Zwift compared. Note that I am using the Tacx Booster on setting 2 along with a speed/cadence sensor--both Trainer Road and Zwift use published power curves for the Tacx Booster to estimate power generated based on speed. First off is Trainer Road vs. Stages. The comparison here is really good! The averages actually are pretty spot on. Stages data has more variability, which I think should be expected. But in all, Trainer Road seems to have this one dialed in.

On the other hand, Zwift is way off. I kinda suspected this because I was barely getting winded while pumping out 270 watt sets. As shown in the plot below, power can be off by as much 60 watts! Yes, Zwift makes you seem like a monster, but it is not real. Especially, during three sprints (the three spikes around 12 to 15 minutes) they diverged quite a bit--Zwift seemed to plateu before 400 watts, but Stages went all the way to 800 watts. I believe the latter because I was mashing super hard and it seemed that Zwift just flatlined.

Again, I want to emphasize that these findings are solely based on using the Tacx Booster and Stages FSA EVO386 crank power meter--your results will most likely vary. Well, there it is. Enjoy at let me know what you think!

Yessir!So, several of you probably already know that I have decided to take up an offer to move up to Calgary and help out with our new Canada office. All I can say is that I am very grateful for this opportunity! It is a great feeling to know that they actually listen to my wants and needs and try to make it to where it is beneficial for both me and the company.

It is currently a crazy time with a lot of changes unfolding. Although it has been a while, I am somewhat accustomed to this type of change. It is still hard, though. This is one of the longest, if not the longest, time I've been in one place. Through all my travels and experiences I have meet amazing people and experienced amazing cultures. As with Texas, I never thought I would end up in Canada, but the lure of the Rocky Mountains was too strong. Plus it is a grand opportunity for me to accelerate my professional growth.

But enough of that--this is an adventure racing blog! I'm so looking forward to the new outdoor adventures that are sure to come! I really hope my friends in Houston come up and explore these new-to-me regions. Plus, I'm going to be even closer to Glacier/Waterton, so no more excuses for yearly trips! That said, I hope to become a curling aficionado in no time.

I think the biggest transition is going to be trying to find a new workout crew, especially for Ironman Florida. I really hope this doesn't mean a lot of lonely miles on bike and foot, but it may become my new reality for a little bit at least. I know the Race the Rockies and Raid the North crews up there, so hopefully I can hook up with them and they band of merry adventurers.

I am still in a bit of shock because I had been talking about this potential move for over a year now, making it seem to be less realistic as time went on. But it IS happening and I might even get a bonus, short stint in St. Johns also to help out with a project out there.

As someone recently reminded me of my own favorite saying: "Change is Inevitable, Growth is Optional." Here's to a new growth chapter in the adventures of K-SPoT!

This one is a bit odd because a couple of teams skipped CPs on the VERY windy paddle leg, in anticipation of getting CPs later on that other teams (including us) would most likely not have time to get to.

Needless to say, as the graph shows, this was a pretty close race to the end, with all 5 teams finishing in a tight bunch, which seems pretty unusual to me for a 12hr. And it was a full 12hr--usually the winning team finishes several hours before the cutoff.

Anyway, as usual, there will be Monday morning QB-ing about this one...nevertheless, it was fun! And the hills/wind on the bike were great for training! Ugh. :)K-SPoThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17980701875474582337noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8942601.post-22839692541289955102011-01-20T07:02:00.000-06:002011-01-20T08:10:02.538-06:00Follow SuperMonkey's New ChallengeAlthough not an AR challenge, this is more than worthy to be my first blog of the new year (and the first blog in almost a year)! Not saying that it was bad, but in racing-terms it was DOA. Work had unexpectedly ramped up and I totally buckled down for the upcoming PE-Structural I exam. So in a nutshell, the only active stuff I'm currently able to do is swim during lunch (that has improved--swimming 1 mile straight each session) and occasionally get a quick training ride with the CVX crew on weekends (even if the cold and wind try to conspire against us).

Boo hoo. Okay, I guess since my life is boring I should talk about other people for a change. Before that, lets cry for me some more--I didnt get picked in the Leadville 100 lottery...could be that everyone else also saw "Race Across the Sky!" But good news is that a few friends of ours did: The Cajun, Iron Will, and Cyn. That will be an awesome experience! Iron Will already got his buckle, so he's just there to show off now.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUhe0XRwygRE5H_hoeu8uWgdQ_5zkU3EKI7c2zj3hl0eMBY9z3Yfiu-945xkgCvbXYRapFQq9FL3TqNxCIUK8UNe_7fxHiFSvgtcCS9yc8o7vBlS67rLjRRGzAZ2H5vTUGrf9O/s320/18465_268537298184_669158184_4233038_5144891_n.jpg" border="0" alt="fields of gold"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5436998911511504914" />Since the last time I blogged, I have done some fun stuff. West End occasionally does a "Crappy Road Ride" and it is as it sounds. Raymund and I decided to go and do the 01-01-10 edition the day after New Years. Amazingly, a good number showed...and some on road bikes?!? Apparently they didnt see the photos. Anyway, we roll out bright and early, not before I have to ride all the way back home because I forgot my HELMET!! Wow, was I ridin dirteh or what.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrCdhRGnMaEuxdR86zU67VxLgrEVSFPWSzKlOeoz45_G5Abhy6h2NbQId7Izml6JDjrJ2OY6saOfGCrmGbekcdpMP1ZluVWzLWYEEbyt6A_Ojnd_GYS0HpzbTT-Z5Tm55V9v-u/s320/18465_268537403184_669158184_4233046_5642322_n.jpg" border="0" alt="H skyline"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5436999071166872162" />It was a really good ride with a lot of ninja routes--I just wondered how he knew about all of those short cuts! Now, if I could only find a similar route to work I would do it everyday! We actually started off near my house, then on White Oak Bayou, Heights, Downtown, East Side, Downtown, Heights, and back to West End. Good times! I cant wait to do that ride again!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHHBro8FsgOffk937WTPX7HTpS1NbpdceGqYwW80JHUKxTv92rXFfJMOM-tie6cAv2ZMFTpdxtcbV3-3ItJ7HSJ3bZrMq3HFxM64WVawioEEB1g3ZRHjHeZI9pUK2KXoFQ3JbSNg/s320/18465_268537428184_669158184_4233048_1230344_n.jpg" border="0" alt="roadie = fish outta water"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5436999172655947266" />In AR news, apparently they keep on racing without me. Big Chill was a couple of weeks ago--this was the 2nd year in a row that I missed...after not missing it for 4 straight years! Dang work...jk, work is really good to have these days! It sounded like the weather was relatively warm for a change. Final standings were Vignette, iMOAT, HFAR, Steelsports, then two HART teams for the 24hr. Our shirtless friends, the Flying Monkeys won the 12hr male div (and overall), while two HART teams got 4th and 5th coed.

Warda was this past weekend, but I havent seen any race reports and I'm not about to bushwhack through that mess of results! One final note: the new HART website is up and running! Its still in its infancy, so bear with us as we fine tune it. But if you want to come out and train, it has all the info you need to meet up with us!

Okay, time to duck down back into work. Until next time, mash hard!K-SPoThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17980701875474582337noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8942601.post-50749606331405376852009-12-27T19:03:00.003-06:002009-12-27T19:15:13.919-06:00Houston Navigation Meet 09 Results<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzjw8LD67H37bI2VfiQ3G61-lo5iq84JYNKU98zcdZcxllGu-o95LiziKw2hV754RosZr68_wtROVnfx6tTOffy6SSW_bnwlQMgsZ2wHZpro5g76bskAq9Hoq2VUrQKFDUFaPf1A/s320/PC261606.JPG" border="0" alt="Top 3 + Tommy (5th)"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420089273349169986" />Congrats to Nathan and Jason Winklemann, who finished 1st and 2nd, respectively, while Helena Finley and Bobby Kitchen secured 3rd place at the H-NAV 09! I just put up the top 5 because the results were in graphic form (couldnt copy and paste). The top chart of course shows how Arild had full control of the race until the last leg with the passport issue. But what's interesting is that after having a good 1st leg coming in 2nd, Shake and Bake started losing ground and were fighting for 2nd 2-male for most of the race until Semper Fi (Jim Kronaeger and Son) blew it open on the last bike leg.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 309px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1gdPdRlmcqx62MaiMZ6hDUIEnnHtS-9X-OKnvxl6NZHHYc8y8R1MOD7f2t_kXyyHQ0Q6fgHloabW3S_vcRtZig0WdBlP-sB2xMp4mG1rpPcou7XGI7jBYji5Qj5ApXy8bKfe5/s400/RBP2splits.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5407682192932424722" />
The splits chart shows pretty much the same thing, but it gives a better picture of each of the leg times. Arild controlled the run and paddles, while I kept it nice and close with good bike times. Shake and Bake actually had a really good 2nd paddle, keeping them neck and neck with Semper Fi. Negative splits on the paddle, as should be expected (downstream instead of upstream) and a couple of us were able to have negative splits on the bike!

Fun with graphs...yay!K-SPoThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17980701875474582337noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8942601.post-66717549055136316942009-11-23T06:22:00.001-06:002009-11-23T09:26:58.601-06:00RunBikePaddle Sprint AR #2 Suunto T6 Log<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 283px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTV3OTwlzL75snEuVYXbIOITOADMfhaV7mNUQcd72VRn6S2W7ouhBvOXFH64EeIfc6Em7NKE4QnkP5isPglQBHVxHXedyY230RW5tPTBUbWr0eGy3ronqnzH1YM0zuKd9TSLEmuA/s400/RunBikePaddle+Sprint+AR+%232+2009.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5407319995841997090" />

* 3mi run
1mi paddle
1mi run
9mi bike
1mi run
1mi paddle
9mi bike

** pods not used

*** start altitude about 30ft below actualK-SPoThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17980701875474582337noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8942601.post-73496187970512387162009-10-28T06:51:00.000-05:002009-10-28T08:02:38.386-05:00USARA Nationals 2009 Suunto LogsSmartbelt Log
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 283px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfcB2uadgvOysZ12QwZCR2mtDjRCsky15s75wuY18VFGfisMfSU0icXEPhWh5dh2u3nDvi1WIm3Uygh1ATOcyx_2xS64uk05pdTiWdUyZO8yFiJlun7Rp3p6iFu4FarQJgOszh/s400/USARA+Nationals+2009.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5397634790312033346" />

T6 Log* (includes altitude data**)
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 283px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkzJscylIOfzJ9T2x4t0yYafHvm81r9cPHPzSYFU3Q415FjUgNcKadd24y5n6tySjun_sY86O1Ouj-dGL-QM2v7qTIo656_cIAASReEgLgbwrYx1JAyXXUqGhbj95zbMEHwV-m5w/s400/USARA+Nationals+2009_altitude.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5397635109320133810" />

* pods not used due to race rigors
** T6 log stopped early due to full memoryK-SPoThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17980701875474582337noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8942601.post-81334168100576020272009-10-27T12:15:00.001-05:002009-10-27T15:04:38.896-05:00Back on the Horse: Glen Rose Recap<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIdCLHmSrY1IE657bSfxwUt5LxNQRVmtS2NEVCmLqQP1PQkuf7HXymF9tWDdFsR2TQAdepbwXQKvypiI6OtJUayZtzCTujsMqOMYgmZ3BdpsOCQ1nBhY9tjLKm0TPn3jBhjTri/s320/6569_124589232151_552997151_3055683_8216961_n.jpg" border="0" alt="chumming it up at start line"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5397368444606757458" />I guess that now that all the insanity of the wedding has died down and racing season is pretty much coming to a slow close, I can get back to blogging. Then again, I doubt anyone really missed my entries—didn’t hear a peep from anyone during the past 3 or so months regarding it! Either way, I will try to keep this bad boy going for at least a little longer, but I would like a bit of input to know if anyone even reads this garbage!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 213px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKd1yeh4m3vyK1u8dYDG4U62zQoF28hLv1HIITVfIngOUCf3Em2nK376RZ4Zp-MAisSXOdEsEY6pNQq-k6wUkeijaXzrlGcO5QGHLjF3I_AeeYkcNYnF1km940-wtuf8mf2vLWKw/s320/6569_124589237151_552997151_3055684_2169316_n.jpg" border="0" alt="i think this is the only time we smiled that race"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5397368693885802722" />So, lets see. I pretty much stopped communication right before the final sprint of the season—I’ll try to recap what I remember from the race. It was hot…again. We had to drive all the way out to Glen Rose, which was basically west and south of Dallas. Scottie was already there, so I met up with her and then did a preride of the course by myself since she had already previewed it. After a bit of screwing around at the race site, we retired to the hotel with Dave P.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 289px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwNknu46A_8TkEsfH0rd8IRlb3d9Hc36Ncfd__pUs8-CgkHsrkQ8u50nmSQhT8lUDHsidSjxi5k83RAW65h_uENf6KP1fkjPmSIN34_SytR8FhGacXLdhyk4HGWv376W46hBQ7/s320/6569_124589247151_552997151_3055686_5346536_n.jpg" border="0" alt="hanging with the pack"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5397368968387454978" />Race was brutal because of the nasty climbs and the temps. It started off with a run with an immediate hill climb. It went alright and we were keeping a good pace and were still in the top pack by the time we got back to transition. We had to ride to the boat put in where we ran head on, literally, with a bad omen. I was towing Scottie on the bike down this jeep trail when all the sudden a cow starts barreling down at us! At first I figured it would see us and get out of the way…nope! It kept running towards us until, at the last second, we both veered away from each other! Damn cow was playing chicken! I escaped harm, but Scottie lost control and crashed. We collected ourselves, still wondering if that really happened, then continued to the boat drop.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 193px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidBL-Ds4l04KQrFVDg2hSyh0lNH5sBY9z0USqDzndCKVgF_QXXBThwQB8XRMEsXV4H9lePrrSFtPcQEUGS0Q2VVGO4iCWat0Au3dNyDc_wPy1goqHNZEQURY2cPq18N3kjzt608g/s320/6569_124589332151_552997151_3055696_967361_n.jpg" border="0" alt="scramble!"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5397369238739944706" />We started off rough on the paddle as SOMEONE forgot their seat. :) Oh well, we would manage. We actually were paddling really strong; I seem to remember us being in the top 10 or something like that. We consistently started passing teams. We got back to the boat drop and had to lug that rubber duckie up the steep dropoff. We were back on our bikes and had to head back to transition—it was mandatory as a precaution against the heat, to give teams a chance to take on more water.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 218px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAshMZjoiVd0Vkv2dDn18O1wKBPL9Pa5fJ4-nI2H3ikpPNLS2Blv0rAHlOE9mnLfO6COw2xT_92olqowme_lg-hstNc8HsX9UasoioKsxzFRqDpCYStCEcLCQQWkgRNPGpDkqAVg/s320/6569_124589442151_552997151_3055712_14536_n.jpg" border="0" alt="even the bike was brutal!"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5397369670139052146" />We start off on the bike and realize we are in front of iMOAT for probably the first time in the series! We tried to keep our lead, but the heat and hilly terrain was just too much for us. We had to actually turn it back a notch so that we didn’t blow a gasket. This was probably our slowest race. Somehow we make it through the course and get back to TA. We have one final leg, a special test. It was kinda wimpy as we had to put on and take off jerseys successively and that was it. We sprinted to the finish with all kinds of anguish showing on our faces. We finished 4th in the race and 4th overall for the entire season, which are both good considering the competition.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOiZA2TFLMY9A1mC0rEqUT1_ggq_DaENKV78JBYtMsh6DMf8Ot0bQrIdBJaiegY3hyphenhyphen3znm2FcIqBX69AUUZSnt94P9pYkO9nlh_Krqx4ayE4-5g1n9GdSouMe7mASkoVemQvI15w/s320/untitled.jpg" border="0" alt="leave it all on the course!"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5397372168575085538" />I stayed for the awards ceremony then left to Dallas to get Mo’s wedding band…and that was it. Drove back home from there and was back in time for dinner. The sprint series was over and I was pretty happy about it. So, I will stop there and start on the No Sweat race for the next entry.
